  • THE BIG PLASTIC COUNT

    Fri 20 May 2022

    20th May 2022

A MESSAGE FROM THE ECO TEAM

Your family has the opportunity to participate in an important national investigation.

The Big Plastic Count is the UK’s biggest ever investigation into household plastic waste. By counting your household plastic waste packaging for a week, you and your child will help tackle plastic pollution.

The survey will take place from Monday 23rd May  to Sunday 29th May OR Monday 30th May to Sunday 5th June

    AIM

This year is crucial in the fight against plastic pollution. The government is deciding targets to reduce plastic waste. With your help, The Big Plastic Count will uncover the truth about how much household plastic is recycled, presenting real evidence that will persuade the government to take action.

This isn’t about rating your recycling habits, so don’t feel embarrassed by how much you throw away. Everyday plastic is hard to avoid. That’s what we want to change. By taking part in The Big Plastic Count, you and your family are part of the solution.

After all, recycling alone cannot solve the plastic crisis. There needs to be less plastic in the first place. That’s why our mission is for the government to set a target to reduce single-use plastic by 50% by 2025 and to ban waste exports to other countries.

    HOW TO TAKE PART

From Monday morning until Sunday evening, either:

    1. Collect then count: Collect your plastic waste in a separate bag and count it at the end of the week using the My Tally Sheet your child brings home. Or:
    2. Count as you throw: Count every piece of plastic package as you throw it away by tallying it up on your My Tally Sheet.

    TOP TIPS

    • We want to tally all of the plastic packaging you use in a week, including on-the-go items like take-away cups, plastic bags and fast food packaging. So count what you buy when you're out and about, as well as household items.
    • Use the Plastic ID page to help you categorise your plastic.
    • Count everything! This means all plastic packaging.
    • Tell everyone you live with to count or collect each piece of plastic they throw away.
    • Don’t forget bathroom waste and packaging from the post too!
    • Put your My Tally Sheet somewhere noticeable like on the fridge or next to the bin to help you remember that it’s The Big Plastic Count week. Tallying your plastic for the week might sound like a lot but it should only take a couple of minutes out of your day. Once your household has completed the survey, your child will: Bring the Let’s Count Tally Sheet in on Monday 6th June so we can record your results.

  • JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

    Fri 20 May 2022 VAB

    JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

    Dear Parents/Carers

As you know the Queen’s Jubilee is taking place over the May/June half term holiday. For such an important, historical occasion, we felt it important that we mark this in a very special way. Please see information below so that you know what is happening, when it is happening and if a contribution/cost is required.

-Friday 27th May we will be funding ‘Through the Queen’s Decades’ workshop for all classes. Children will experience and learn about the history of each decade that the Queen has been our monarch.

-Tuesday 7th June we will be having a live theatre production in the school hall (Jungle Book)…as always this promises to be great fun.

-Wednesday 8th June is our big celebration day:

    * all children will be painting a commemorative ceramic plate that they can take home (we have a company coming into school who will facilitate this)

    * all classes will take part in a dance workshop (led by dance experts) – each workshop will focus on a different decade and we would ask children to come dressed in the style of that decade on that day:

    YR 2010 – 2020;  Y1 2000 – 2010;   Y2 1990 – 2000;   Y3 1980 – 1990;   Y4 1970 – 1980;               Y5 1960 – 1970;   Y6 1950 – 1960

    * through the day all children will have the chance to work with different teachers in the following workshops:  Forest School;  Art and Craft;  Sports;  Music from the decades;  Facts and research using computers

    * at lunchtime we hold our very own street party outside in the playground – children are asked to bring into school a very special, jubilee celebration-worthy packed lunch (ice creams will be provided) If you still wish to order a school dinner on that day – only sandwiches will be available (please do not order a hot lunch for Wednesday 8th June).

To cover costs of the theatre production, ceramic plate workshop, dance workshop and decorations we are requesting a contribution of £8 per pupil – PTFA have kindly offered to subsidise the cost, along with school (this will be on parentpay from today)

Many thanks for your support with this – great fun will be had by all!

  • COLLECTING CHILDREN AT THE END OF THE DAY - REVIEWED SECURITY PROCEDURES

    Mon 02 May 2022 V Ainsworth-Brown

GATE SECURITY AT THE THE END OF THE DAY

    Dear Parents/carers

In the interests of safeguarding and security, we have reviewed our procedures for collecting children at the end of the day. This is particularly important, as, due to building work, we are now using just one gate for exiting school. Our procedures at the end of the day are effective when parents, staff and children work together to ensure safe exit and secure collection at the end of each day. So, for maximum security of all children, could we please request that the following procedures are followed by all adults who collect children from school at the end of the day (if other adults collect children – please could you make them aware of these procedures too). All class teachers and members of staff who are on gate duty have been briefed in these procedures:

    1. YR Y1 Y2 children will continue to be collected from the classroom door by their adult (it is essential that school is informed if a different adult will be collecting your child; it is also important that your child knows who is collecting them that day).
    2. YR Y1 Y2 children need to stay with their adult whilst walking from the classroom to the gate. Due to the business of the gate, staff will not be able to supervise children who reach the gate without their parents/adult, so any child who reaches the gate without an adult, will be asked to return to their adult on the playground.
    3. Y3 children will still be collected from the playground – the class teacher will bring them to the YR fence – adults need to be on the playground to collect, not outside of the gate/school fence.
    4. Y4 children will be walked around to the gate by their class teacher and will wait behind the fence near the gate – when they see their adult (and their teacher sees their adult) they will be allowed to go. PLEASE COULD WE ASK THAT ADULTS ARE IN SIGHT OF THE GATE (not in cars, further down the road, round the corner etc) staff will need to see that an adult is there for collection.
    5. Y5 and Y6 children will be walked to the gate by their class teacher – IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE HAVE WRITTEN PERMISSION FOR A CHILD TO WALK HOME ON THEIR OWN - IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE THIS PLEASE FILL IN THE ATTACHED FORM.
    6. Siblings: if your YR/Y1/Y2 child is in ‘siblings’ service, please ensure that an adult collects them form the hall, not their KS2 sibling.
    7. Please can all parents/adults keep reminding their children of the rule: IF YOUR ADULT ISN’T THERE, DON’T GO OUT OF THE GATE, TELL A SCHOOL ADULT AND WAIT WITH THEM…class teachers will remind children of this on a regular basis – the message will be embedded if parents do this too.
    8. A ‘Keep-Safe’ assembly will take place – as it does form time to time – when children will be reminded of these procedures, as well as other ways that they can keep themselves safe.

Many thanks for your help and co-operation with these procedures – I am confident that if we all work together, then our children will continue to be safe and secure when leaving school at the end of the day.
